Opportunities for paramedic practice-based education
Abstract
The current shortage of paramedics presents particular challenges for paramedic educators in the field of practice learning. However,
There has been a shortage in the UK paramedic workforce since 2010 and one that was not predicted by the Centre for Workforce Intelligence (2012), who had foreseen a growth in paramedic numbers to match the rise in demand for unscheduled out-of-hospital health care. Despite an increase in the paramedic workforce of 28% between 2005 and 2010, with estimates predicting that the workforce would continue to increase by a further 11% from 2010 (Centre for Workforce Intelligence, 2012), there was instead a national shortage of paramedics, with 1 250 vacancies across the UK as of February 2015 (National Health Executive, 2015). Calls to UK ambulance services continued to increase yearly, 8% per annum (Woollard, 2006) and 5.1% in the year 2011–2012 (Health and Social Care Information Centre, Workforce and Facilities, 2012).
