Supporting those embarking on their career in winter

As my favourite season descends and nature produces its annual exhibition of glorious autumnal colours, I note what an exciting time it has been for so many colleagues. Positivity is sweeping across social media, as newly attained registration PINs appear to multiply exponentially, in enthusiastic celebration of a final chapter of what will have been a challenging, intense and fulfilling period of learning. Those new registrants will now embark on their chosen career, with trepidation, eagerness and a degree of anxiety as the burden of responsibility begins to feel very real.

The void they have left in universities has quickly filled with a new band of students. Pictures of new friendships that will last a lifetime and new uniforms (that may not last a semester) are shared, liked and celebrated. Right now, for many of them, the size of the task ahead is only just dawning.

It is indeed an exciting time, for them and for us. We are lucky to be part of this ever-evolving professional landscape. As a consultant paramedic, the end of the academic year brings a sense of achievement and satisfaction because I hope, in some small way, I have made an impact on those graduating from my local University. I have always considered it a priority of my role, to engage with and support the local student paramedic body. I hope that I have made my mark, whether directly through some of the topics I have taught or indirectly through the supportive processes I oversee in my broader leadership role.
