Dear Editor,

We write in response to ‘The education and role of the new nurse paramedic’ by Fenney in the December 2020 issue of the JPP.

We note that the postgraduate MSci Nurse Paramedic programme described by Fenney at Edge Hill University has been approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) (2020) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (2020). This response does not seek to undermine the approvals process governed by the HCPC and NMC—nor the approval of the course, or any comment on individuals who hold joint registration as both a nurse and paramedic. This response is solely to the comment on the article published.

Fenny introduces the programme from the basis of the emerging ‘community paramedic’ role within the UK, commenting on the need for ‘a new integrated practitioner with a defined skill set’, and the subsequent conflation of two professions. Fenney outlines the premise of the combined role:
