Abstract

Mike Dunkley was recently asked to provide an article from the student perspective aimed at potential paramedic recruits, which describes what they should expect in the application process, the education programme, and the demands of training in the pre-hospital environment.

Paramedicine is a dynamic and fast-evolving profession that has progressed dramatically in recent years. It is a physically and mentally demanding role that requires excellent clinical decision-making skills and an ability to work under pressure. The modern paramedic is expected to respond to any medical emergency, any time, any place, anywhere; taking control of a potentially life-threatening situation while directing others in their team.

While responding to emergencies requires having the training and skills to drive an emergency vehicle, that is only part of the job. Crucially, it is the underlying knowledge and skills required to carry out safe and effective patient care when you arrive on scene that is important. This could be anything from delivering a baby, treating a trauma patient involved in a road traffic accident, or assessing and treating an elderly person who has had a fall.

It is because of the diversity of the paramedic role that education and training is so important. Many programmes are now undertaken at universities in partnership with local ambulance trusts in order to provide the essential underpinning knowledge and skills to deal with modern pre-hospital emergency care. This also prepares the student for lifelong learning and the ability to critique research, as well as staying up-to-date as an effective practitioner.
