The use of telemedicine technology to support in pre-hospital patient care

Volume 6 · Issue 7

Abstract

Lack of accurate clinical information and availability to expertise at the incident scene can affect patient safety and outcome. The use of technology to capture, transmit and assess patient data and information can be used to ensure better patient outcome and more efficient use of resources. Telemedicine can also be of benefit for ED doctors to discuss emergency situations with paramedics, providing advice in terms of treatment, triage and referral to alternative medical facilities.

This article will explore the concept of using technology to support paramedic practice in the assessment and management of primary care and critically ill patients. The available technology can not only capture relevant patient data and information but can also safely and effectively transmit this information to other health care professionals (HCPs).

The growth and adoption of technology has rapidly progressed in the past 10–15 years. Our personal use of technology in the UK has grown exponentially; 21.7 million homes now have broadband connectivity, 94% of adults own/use a mobile phone, 97% of UK homes have a digital TV and 43% of homes have a DAB radio (Ofcom, 2013). Referred to as Generation Y, those aged 25–30 years are most likely to use a smartphone; however, the Generation Zs (the 16–24-year-olds) have an 85% smartphone ownership, with almost half this group using apps for shopping rather than visiting the store. The over 55 year age group are expected to account for the largest growth in smartphone ownership in 2014 (Deloitte, 2014). Ownership of tablet devices has risen by over 24% in 2013, with one in 10 households owning a tablet, most being used to access the internet for entertainment purposes. Over 90% of parents who own tablets stated that their children use their tablet regularly for accessing television, and a majority (76%) of these parents consider the tablet a useful tool for entertaining and/or educating their children (Ofcom, 2013).
