Rhabdomyolysis was first reported in German literature in 1881; however, the symptoms and clinical presentation were first described during the blitz of London. Bywaters (1941) noted four cases of a similar presentation in casualties of the aftermath of a bombing raid, all of whom had experienced crush injuries.
